FINDING YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE
Posted: 15th March 2007
My belief is that we all have a purpose in life. Something that can benefit others. If you are making a career transition, the first place to start is there. Look deep inside to see if you see patterns of activities you truly love doing. Activities where you lose track of time. Note these down. This can be one of the things that help you find your purpose. Once found (I make it sound so simple, it is not) then let's see what roles you want to play in living out your purpose -- value creation for others where money is exchanged (revenue generating/a job/career), a hobby, volunteering, etc.

I believe that every human being possess within them the profound desire to achieve or accomplish something meaningful. This desire is rooted in the essence of the person and it is what I call "Their Right Livelihood or Purpose".

I've been traveling a bit this month. First in UAE/Dubai and then Thailand/Hua Hin. Both cultures are very different from each other and very different from the people in Paris where I live and the Americans, whom I am. In thinking about Life Purpose in different cultures it is important to note that a culture can assist or prohibit living out one's purpose in life - or even the luxury of finding one's purpose.
In Dubai for instance there is so much growth, so much opportunity. There are huge cranes building over 50 story buildings everywhere you can see -- for miles in each direction. "They" said that 25% of the world's building cranes are in Dubai. There is a lot of opportunity and I can feel an acceptance of women in the workforce - it is slow but occuring.
In passing Bangkok on the way to our destination in Hua Hin there is an incredible amount on growth as well. Here there seems to be many more women in the work force though from my vantage point it was hard to tell which jobs.
I would like to do a little more research into world acceptance of living one's purpose -- for men and women alike. If you have insights into this area, please post your thoughts.

My husband recently lost his job, and we are in the midst of brain-storming and soul-searching as we plan the next steps in our lives. A couple of days ago he came to me with a business proposition that he felt would be lucrative but was, in my eyes, boring. I asked him, "Would you feel fulfilled doing that? Is it something you can see yourself continuing to do for 20 years or more?" He hinted that perhaps I should get my head out of the clouds, and that we have to make money in life and can't always be living a dream. While I admit I tend to be an idealist, this is an area I just don't care to compromise on. Too much of one's time and energy is devoted to work to be doing something we don't enjoy. Perhaps this is a gender difference: Men try to be rational providers and gravitate toward the money, and women want to acknowledge and honor their emotions more? Or maybe it's simply a difference in personality rather than gender. In either case, I agree with Alexander that deep within us we all want to achieve or accomplish something meaningful. The beauty of it is, "meaningful" means different things to all of us. And if we look for it, we can create meaning in a seemingly mundane task. And that's what makes the world go 'round. :)

You and me, we are all called for a purpose in life. But for some, its the hardway around. Being positive and moving on with your life would inspire others and make your life cool.
