The Power of the Decision Statement  by Jane Weddle
Comments (0)

Joe, a Manager with XYZ Bank was disappointed with the lack of analysis and discussion his team put forth in a recent decision meeting. The decision being considered was “to select an external trainer to provide customer service classroom training over the lunch hour for all tellers at all the branches”. The decision was being addressed at such a narrow level, the team assumed many of the larger issues had been decided, such as:
  • Is the training necessary? Do all tellers need the training?
  • Is an external resource necessary? If so, what are the reasons?
  • Is classroom training the best option, or are there other ways to accomplish the objective?
  • What is the objective?
  • Is lunchtime the best time to do the training, or are there other options?
At the next team meeting Joe made the following improvement to the decision statement: “Improve customer service at the XYZ bank”. He saw much more analysis and discussion from the team!!

Action Idea: What is a decision that you or your team needs to make? What is the purpose of the decision? What is to be accomplished? Write your decision statement by combining a decision verb (choose, improve, select…) with the object (person, place, method, product…) to be chosen. Then modifiers can be added sparingly to narrow the alternatives.
